This town is big enough for the two of them. Two outlaw sisters are riding onto the Broadway stage in Wanted, a new musical telling the real-life story of Mary and Martha Clarke, who took desperate measures to save their mother from debt in 1893 Texas.

Angelica Chéri, a descendant of the Clarkes, and Ross Baum make their Broadway debuts as the show's writers. They and director Stevie Walker-Webb have assembled a powerhouse cast that includes Broadway stars (like Solea Pfeiffer), West End stars (Liisi LaFontaine and Bradley Jaden), Grammy-honored R&B musicians (Ledisi and Luke James), and veterans of Wanted's pre-Broadway productions (LaFontaine, Aurelia Williams, and Awa Sal Secka).

Before saddling up to see them at the James Earl Jones Theatre, get to know the cast of Wanted below. They discussed their characters, their favorite outlaw movies and iconic duos, and their recommendations for who would love Wanted on Broadway.

Liisi LaFontaine (Martha Clarke)

Solea Pfeiffer (Mary Clarke)

Ledisi (Tallulah Clarke)

Bradley Jaden (Jesse)

Luke James (Elijah)

Aurelia Williams (Sissy)

Awa Sal Secka (Flo)

Liisi LaFontaine (Martha Clarke)

Liisi LaFontaine and Solea Pfeiffer aren't just onstage partners in crime. They're real-life best friends who have been "attached at the hip" for the last eight years, according to LaFontaine.

"We met in 2018, and she was the person I went through the end of my 20s with, through breakups and new relationships and really discovering who we are as we grow into ourselves," she said. "She's been my twin flame by my side."

Who she plays: [Martha is] the sister that's a little tougher. I'm the one who has the gun. I'm the one who's more of the activist, leading the charge for our people.

What I love about the story is that these two sisters represent completely different ways of getting what you want. It's really cool to represent a very strong, independent, hard, and very complicated woman when women are so often supposed to be small and delicate. It's really fun to play someone that's so in your face.

Favorite outlaw/heist movie: I love the Ocean's movies. Ocean's 8's my comfort movie, babe. It's so good. And I just love all the women.

Favorite iconic duo: Smoke and Stack from Sinners. They are two other very iconic twins who take matters into their own hands.

Solea Pfeiffer (Mary Clarke)

Solea Pfeiffer is no stranger to 19th-century American leading ladies. She first played Mary Clarke in Wanted's Arlington, Virginia world premiere in 2020, three years after starring as Eliza in Hamilton's national tour. More recently, she's lassoed lead roles in Hadestown, Moulin Rouge!, and Almost Famous on Broadway.

Who she plays: Mary Clarke is twin sisters with Martha Clarke, and she is the cockeyed optimist.

Between the two sisters, she's the one who's like, "We deserve all of this," and isn't quite understanding of all she has to give up in order to get that. But that's what I love about her. She is like, "I was born deserving, so shouldn't I have all the nice things?"

Favorite outlaw/heist movie: Thelma & Louise. The classics are all great. I love the Ocean's movies. Does Big Fat Liar count? I love a story about revenge. I love a story about someone pulling one over on somebody.

Favorite iconic duo: My favorite iconic duo is [me and Liisi]. Has been the favorite iconic duo, going to be the favorite iconic duo of my heart for a while. That's my girl. We've been cutting up around New York City and around the world for a minute now.

You'll like Wanted if you like: Sinners, Thelma & Louise, Beyoncé — and even Disney: "This is, we really hope, the next American classic."

Ledisi (Tallulah Clarke)

Grammy-winning R&B musician Ledisi is returning to Broadway for the first time in over 20 years. After making her debut in Caroline, or Change and performing in a Hair benefit concert, both in 2024, she's tackling her biggest Broadway role yet as a mother with a future to protect.

Who she plays: I play Tallulah Clarke, the mother and matriarch of the Clarke family. She has two daughters, Mary and Martha Clarke, who save their family by passing for white.

Favorite outlaw/heist movie: Ocean's Eleven and Harlem Knights

Favorite iconic duo: Thelma and Louise

Bradley Jaden (Jesse)

After 15 years on the West End theatre scene, Bradley Jaden caught the attention of stateside theatregoers as Javert in the recent Les Misérables arena tour. And the Bradley buzz never died down: Mere days after Les Mis left NYC, news of his Broadway debut in Wanted hit the headlines.

Who he plays: Jesse Whitewater is a deep character. Let's say there's some trouble in there. Without giving too much away, he's been through a lot and he's seen a lot.

What I hope the audience gets from this character is to challenge themselves of what they see, to be shocked by what I hopefully show, but not shocked in the right ways, if that makes sense. I hope they understand it's the truth.

Favorite outlaw/heist movie: 3:10 to Yuma. Christian Bale, I love him as an actor.

Favorite iconic duo: Ren & Stimpy

Luke James (Elijah)

Two-time Grammy Award nominee Luke James is back on Broadway for the first time since making his debut in Thoughts of a Colored Man five years ago. You've seen him as an R&B singer, a songwriter, and a star of TV shows like The Chi, but you've never seen him as a cowboy.

Who he plays: I play a cowboy by the name of Elijah. He's the right-hand man of Jesse Whitewater, who is the owner of Sweet Christine, a town in the middle of Texas that our two Wanted heroes happen to come upon.

Favorite outlaw/heist movie: Spike Lee's The Inside Man

Aurelia Williams (Sissy)

Like Wanted writer Angelica Chéri, Aurelia Williams has family history that dates back to 19th-century Texas. One of her ancestors was a gun-toting field worker who reminded Williams and her family of the Clarke sisters, and another was among the first Black men to own land and vote in Luling, Texas.

"Some of [my ancestors'] property is still in our family to this day," said Williams, who returns to the role of Sissy from Wanted's pre-Broadway run in New Jersey. "When we do this story, I can't help but think of how closely related it is to my actual history."

Who she plays: Sissy lives and works in this town, and they see these two ladies here, the two sisters, and they see that everything is not as it appears.

[What] stood out to me is the dehumanizing aspect of people who are domestic workers. The goal was not to do this until you pay for college; this is your life. [Between] Sissy and Flo, Flo is more upfront about it. Sissy is more like, "Look, this is what we got to do and we'll be all right." But we're also going to find some things to enjoy in this life for right now, and a lot of where our enjoyment comes from is from each other. [...] We're going to tell you about yourself, and we're going to tell each other about every, every, every little thing that's going on, too.

Favorite outlaw/heist movie: Old Henry

Favorite iconic duo: Peanut butter and jelly, bacon and eggs, milk and cookies

You'll like Wanted if you like: Family dramas, old black-and-white melodramas

Awa Sal Secka (Flo)

Awa Sal Secka returns from Wanted's world-premiere Virginia production to make her Broadway debut as Flo, a maid alongside Sissy. Secka said Flo starts out wishing for more for herself — "if I just had a chance, if I just had enough courage" — but soon decides to speak up and get it. Flo and Sissy aren't unlike the Clarke sisters in that way.

Who she plays: Flo is a fly on the wall, but she's a loud fly. You're going to hear this fly when it come in the room and go out the room. She don't really care if you know she's there or not.

One of the things she says is, "I'mma tell the truth and make it plain." She has a knowledge about herself and an understanding of the world and the way it works, and that it wants her to be silent and [...] shut up, as they wanted all Black people, Black women, to be. Toward the end of the play, we start to see them make the decision to [...] fight for more.

Favorite outlaw/heist movie: Django Unchained

Favorite iconic duo: Cereal and milk. "Honey Frosted Flakes [...] go crazy with some almond milk."

You'll like Wanted if you like: Bridgerton or Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter
