Immersive ‘Phantom of the Opera’ revival ‘Masquerade’ sets dates, cast for NYC premiere

This new production marks the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical’s return two years after the show closed on Broadway after a record-setting 35 years.

Masquerade, a new, immersive revival of the musical The Phantom of the Opera, will open in New York City this summer. Performances begin on July 31 at 218 W 57th St. in Manhattan.

The Phantom of the Opera, created by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music, book), Richard Stilgoe (book, lyrics), and Charles Hart (lyrics), is a musical about an opera ingenue, Christine Daaé, who is torn between the viscount Raoul, whom she loves, and the mysterious title Phantom, her masked, obsessive, and seductive voice teacher who lives in the underground of the Paris Opera House.

The show originally premiered on Broadway in 1988 at the Majestic Theatre, where it ran for 35 years until closing in 2023, becoming the longest-running Broadway show in history. Directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Pippin, Jagged Little Pill), Masquerade marks the musical’s first NYC return, in which audiences will be able to explore the world of Phantom and the Paris Opera House and interact with the characters — under the light of the iconic chandelier, outfitted with over 30,000 crystals provided by the show's official crystal partner, Preciosa.

The complete Masquerade cast includes Baby Byrne, Nicholas Edwards, Gabriella Enriquez, Haile Ferrier, Nkrumah Gatling, Cooper Grodin, Maxfield Haynes, Bryan Hernandez-Luch, Satomi Hofmann, Kody Jauron, Francisco Javier González, Maree Johnson, Tia Karaplis, Nathan Keen, Joe Kerr, Jeff Kready, Jacob Lacopo, Eryn LeCroy, Raymond J. Lee, Telly Leung, Claire Leyden, Francesca Mehrotra, Georgia Mendes, Betsy Morgan, Riley Noland, Charles Osborne, Hugh Panaro, Chris Ryan, Kyle Scatliffe, Paul Adam Schaefer, Clay Singer, Phumzile Sojola, Jeremy Stolle, Kaley Ann Voorhees, Nik Walker, Andrew Wojtal, Kevin Zambrano, and Anna Zavelson.

Alongside Paulus, the creative team includes Hunter Bird, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Kathy Fabian, James Fluhr, Jessie Flynn, Nicola Formichetti, Skylar Fox, Kate Lumpkin, J. J. Janas, Brett Jarvis, Marc Kimelman, Lee McCutcheon, Scott Pask, Emilio Sosa, Gypsy Snider, Ben Stanton, and William Waldrop.

Webber first confirmed rumors of the production in a 2024 interview with The Times of London. Leading up to the official announcement, Masquerade gained buzz for dropping various teasers, including its cryptic social media accounts, immersive pop-up events and a scavenger hunt in May, and a mail campaign, with red letters sent out to various media personalities and online influencers. A performer dressed up as the Phantom also appeared on the red carpet at the 2025 Tony Awards.

Masquerade comes on the heels of two other successful reinventions of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals: Sunset Boulevard, director Jamie Lloyd’s cinematic Broadway revival playing through July 20, and Cats: The Jellicle Ball, which sets Cats in the queer ballroom scene. That production premiered to acclaim off Broadway in summer 2024 and is also teasing an NYC return.
