
James Monroe Iglehart stars as Lance in & Juliet on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
James Monroe Iglehart is a Tony Award-winning actor who was born in Hayward, California on September 4, 1974. He attended California State University, East Bay and began his stage career in California, appearing in Bat Boy in Palo Alto and as Teen Angel in Grease in San Jose. He then appeared in the 1997 National Tour of Show Boat.
In 2006, he played the role of Mitch Mahoney in the musical comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston and would eventually take over the role on Broadway in April 2007 until the end of its run in January 2008, marking his Broadway debut. One year later, he originated the role of Bobby in the 2009 Broadway premiere of Memphis.
Iglehart’s breakthrough moment came when he secured the role of Genie in Disney’s stage adaptation of Aladdin. After pre-Broadway tryouts in Seattle in 2011 and Toronto in 2013, the show finally opened on Broadway in March 2014, landing Iglehart his first Tony Award.
He moved on from Agrabah to the Richard Rodgers Theatre in April 2017, assuming the dual roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash hit musical Hamilton. Later Broadway musical roles included King Arthur in Spamalot and Louis Armstrong in A Wonderful World, which earned him another Tony nomination.
