See the newest show from queer comedian Morgan Bassichis, directed by 2025 Tony Award winner Sam Pinkleton (Oh, Mary!). Can I Be Frank? plays at SoHo Playhouse for a limited run, this summer only, following its sold-out previous run at La Mama.
In a desperate attempt to prove they can think about anyone other than themself, Morgan Bassichis decides to dig into and discuss the life and work of Frank Maya, a groundbreaking comedian, musician, and performance artist who passed away in 1995 due to AIDS-related complications. In Can I Be Frank? off Broadway, Bassichis humbly attempts to ensure Maya’s legacy is no longer overlooked while finally resolving the bottomless queer search for fame and for father figures — and for laughter in times of crisis.
"I feel overjoyed to get to introduce new audiences to the work of one of our queer artistic ancestors, Frank Maya,” said Morgan Bassichis in a statement. “And I really hope people take away a strong sense of liking me.”
Pinkleton, having worked with Cole Escola on Oh, Mary!, knows a thing or two about creating riotous queer comedy. Directing this new solo show, he added, "I am so excited to spend the summer converting as much of New York City as possible into Morgan Bassichis superfans, as I have been since my very first exposure to their work. Despite what my therapist says, I do believe Morgan may just be the hero we are all looking for right now."
The New Yorker has called Morgan "fiercely hilarious," and now they are back on stage after performances at the Whitney, MoMA PS1, and other esteemed institutions.
