‘Purple Rain’ musical to transfer to Broadway this spring

Adapted from the same-named film and featuring the music of Prince, the show will come to NYC following a world-premiere run in Minneapolis in 2025.

A musical adaptation of the Prince film Purple Rain will come to Broadway this spring, beginning performances at the Majestic Theatre on March 12 ahead of an April 12 opening night. The announcement comes 42 years to the day after the original film was released.

Purple Rain, created from a story by Prince, marked the musician’s feature film debut as The Kid, a young Minneapolis musician chasing success in the new era of music TV — and his troubled past chasing him in turn. The 1984 movie won an Academy Award for Best Original Score and two Grammys, including for the same-named soundtrack album, and it was inducted into the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry in 2019.

The Purple Rain musical retains Prince’s story and songs, including over 20 hits like “When Doves Cry” and the title track, and features a new book by Peter Duchan, based on Albert Magnoli and William Blinn’s screenplay. The show had its world premiere at Hennepin Arts’ State Theatre in Minneapolis in 2025, directed by Tony Award nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz and choreographed by Ebony Williams. Williams will return for the Broadway production alongside music supervisor, arranger, and orchestrator Jason Michael Webb, and Tony nominee Saheem Ali will now direct.

Additionally, longtime Prince bandmates and collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes serve as music advisers.

Purple Rain also has scenic design by David Zinn, video and projection design by Nathan Amzi and Joe Ransom, costume design by Montana Levi Blanco, lighting design by Justin Townsend, sound design by Gareth Owen, hair and wig design by Cookie Jordan, and makeup design by Kyle Krueger.

The cast for Purple Rain on Broadway has yet to be announced.
