New musical ‘Shucked’ to come to Broadway this spring

The musical will play the Nederlander Theatre.

Oh, shucks! A new Broadway musical, titled Shucked, has announced an opening in spring 2023. Performances will begin March 8 at the Nederlander Theatre ahead of an April 4 opening night.

Shucked marries musical comedy with country flair, bringing together artists from both these worlds on its creative team. Jack O’Brien, the five-time Tony Award-winning director of Hairspray, directs, and the book is by Tootsie Tony winner Robert Horn.

They’ve teamed up with Grammy-winning country singer/songwriters Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, who make their Broadway debuts as composer/lyricists for Shucked. The duo have written songs for LeAnn Rimes, Reba McEntire, Sheryl Crow, Kacey Musgraves, and more.

Shucked is about a couple who puts their wedding on hold to save their small town. The show had its world premiere with Pioneer Theatre Company in Utah in October 2022.

The Utah cast of Shucked included Broadway veterans John Behlmann as Gordy, Kevin Cahoon as Peanut, Andrew Durand as Beau, Alex Newell as Lulu, Ashley D. Kelley as Storyteller 1, and Taylor Trensch as Storyteller 2, along with Caroline Innerbichler as Maizy.

All but Trensch will reprise their roles on Broadway; additional casting has yet to be announced.

The Shucked creative team includes choreographer Sarah O’Gleby, scenic designer Scott Pask, costume designer Tilly Grimes, lighting designer Japhy Weideman, sound designer John Shivers, and hair and wig designer Mia Neal. Music supervision, music direction, orchestrations, and arrangements are by Jason Howland.
