There's nothing she can't do! Amanda Reid will star as Ali in [*Hell's Kitchen*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/37579-hells-kitchen-broadway) on Broadway beginning May 27 at the [Shubert Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/venues/shubert-theatre).

Reid is currently making her Broadway debut as an understudy for various roles in *Hell's Kitchen*. She will now assume the leading role originated by [Maleah Joi Moon](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/maleah-joi-moon), who won a 2024 Tony Award for her performance and departed the production on March 30. Jade Milan currently plays Ali through May 25.

Inspired by Alicia Keys' experiences in the city and named for the Manhattan neighborhood where she grew up, *Hell’s Kitchen* takes audiences into the concrete jungle where the 16-time Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter's own dreams were made. Meet 17-year-old Ali, living with a single mother in a small apartment where music fills the streets and the windows open up to a kaleidoscopic, artistic world.

As Ali falls for a bright young drummer, befriends a wise piano teacher, and clashes with her protective single mother, she learns hard truths about life, love, and freedom — but she also learns what great dreams her future can hold.

Keys’ greatest hits and new songs make up the soundscape of the city in *Hell’s Kitchen.* Hailed as “a sparkling story with iconic music and absolute powerhouse vocals” by Variety, *Hell’s Kitchen* is a show as vibrant as New York itself.

Keys earned five Grammy Awards for her 2001 debut album (which featured the hit single “Fallin’”), racked up another four with her second album (which featured “If I Ain’t Got You”), and earned her latest in 2024. She is a classically trained pianist, but Keys' music incorporates a variety of influences, including soul, R&B, pop, and hip-hop. With more than 90 million records sold worldwide, she is one of the bestselling music artists in the world.

Her collaborators on the *Hell’s Kitchen* musical are just as notable. Bookwriter Kristoffer Diaz is a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his play *The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity*, and choreographer Camille A. Brown is a three-time Tony Award nominee, including for the 2022 revival of Ntozake Shange’s *for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf*. Director Michael Greif is a five-time Tony nominee for directing musicals, including the Lower East Side-set *Rent*.

## What to watch for

- *Hell’s Kitchen* isn’t Keys’ first Broadway credit. She composed music for the 2011 Broadway play Stick Fly, and Keys’s musical style inspired a song in the musical Six.
- *Hell’s Kitchen* includes three never-before-heard songs: “Seventeen,” which Keys wrote specifically for the show, and the previously unreleased “Kaleidoscope” and “The River.” Listen for them on stage!
- Keys got the theatre bug in early childhood. She sang in a school production of *Cats* and played Dorothy in *The Wizard of Oz*.
- Fittingly, the whole lead creative team of *Hell’s Kitchen* are New York natives. Alongside Keys, Diaz hails from Yonkers, Greif from Brooklyn, and Brown from Queens.
- The *Hell’s Kitchen* neighborhood got its name in the late 1800s. There are many different origin stories, but they all refer to the fact that the area was run down back then. Nowadays, *Hell’s Kitchen* is a lively entertainment and restaurant district — so the “kitchen” part is still accurate!
- Lin-Manuel Miranda, another NYC native, premiered his blockbuster musical *Hamilton* at The Public Theater before it became a Broadway phenomenon. Now Keys is following in his footsteps!

The *Hell's Kitchen* musical is set in a tiny apartment in the title neighborhood, where 17-year-old Ali has big dreams and a wary mother who tries to keep Ali from repeating her past mistakes. As Ali falls for a young drummer and befriends a piano teacher in her building, she and her mother learn all the possibilities Ali's future can hold — and the racial and coming-of-age obstacles she'll have to overcome to make her dreams come true.

This new show marks Keys' second foray into Broadway theatre following the 2011 play *Stick Fly*, for which she composed original music. She's best known for her acclaimed music career, which has earned her 16 Grammy Awards. Keys is known for her unique sound that blends R&B, soul, hip-hop, and pop, and some of her biggest hits include "Fallin'," "If I Ain't Got You," and "Empire State of Mind." All these existing hits and more appear in *Hell's Kitchen* alongside previously unheard songs.

*Hell's Kitchen* on Broadway is at the Shubert Theatre in the Theatre District, adjacent to Hell's Kitchen. The musical premiered a little further away from the title neighborhood, though: at The Public Theater in Manhattan's NoHo neighborhood. Multiple musicals, including Manhattan native Lin-Manuel Miranda's *Hamilton*, made the move uptown after premiering at the Public. 

Speaking of New York natives, the entire lead creative team of *Hell's Kitchen*, alongside Keys, was also born and raised in the area. Director Michael Greif, a five-time Tony nominee for directing the NYC-set *Rent* and other shows, is from Brooklyn. Choreographer Camille A. Brown (two-time Tony nominee for the 2022 revival of *for colored girls*) hails from Queens, and bookwriter Kristoffer Diaz (Pulitzer Prize finalist for *The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity*) is from Yonkers, just outside the city.

Tank is a multi-Grammy nominated singer, songwriter, producer, and actor. His 25-year career as a musician includes eight #1 singles, such as “Can’t Let It Show,” “I Deserve,” “Slow,” “See Through Love,” “Before We Get Started,” and “When We.” 

He has worked as a songwriter and/or producer for artists like Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Aaliyah, Fantasia, Jamie Foxx, and Jennifer Hudson. His acting credits include Lifetime’s *Seven Deadly Sins: Lust*, HBO’s *Togetherness*, VH-1’s *Hit The Floor*, and BET’s *The New Edition Story* and *The Bobby Brown Story*.

Richardson made his Broadway debut as the Tin Man in the 2024 revival of *The Wiz* before going on to star in *Hell's Kitchen*. On screen, he appeared in the film *Sharper* opposite Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, and John Lithgow, and has made guest appearances on shows including *Chicago P.D., The Last O.G.*, and *The Other Two*.

## How to get to Shubert Theatre
Located at 225 West 44th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenue, the theatre is easily accessible. If commuting by subway, you can take the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, S or shuttle to Times Square station, or the A, C, or E to Port Authority. Additionally, the M104, M42, M6, M7, and M10 buses stop near the Shubert Theatre. It's recommended to plan for potential delays as the area can get crowded during showtimes.

Designed by Henry Beaumont Herts, The Shubert Theatre was built at the same time as the adjoining [Booth Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/booth-theatre). The Shubert Theatre officially opened on October 21, 1913 with *Caesar and Cleopatra* by George Bernard Shaw.

The theatre was named after Sam S. Shubert, one of the founding brothers of the Shubert Organization, which operates 17 Broadway venues. The Shubert Theatre building still houses the organization's offices on the top floor. The Shubert Theatre is a designated New York City landmark.

## How to get to the Shubert Theatre on Broadway

The Shubert Theatre is closest to the 42nd Street subway stop on the A, C, E, 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, and S lines. The closest bus stops are 8th Ave/W 46th St. on the M20 and M104 lines; 7th Ave/W. 44th St. on the M104 line; and 8th Ave/W 43rd St. on the M20, M104, and M34A-SBS line.
