
Sam Rockwell stars as Eddie Carbone in A View from the Bridge off Broadway at the Ellen Stewart Theatre at La MaMa starting November 27, 2026.
Sam Rockwell was born November 5, 1968 in Daly City, California. He is an Academy Award- and Golden Globe-winning actor, known for his screen roles in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Vice, and as Bob Fosse on the hit FX series Fosse/Verdon.
In his formative years, Rockwell split his time between San Francisco and New York. He attended the San Francisco School of the Arts and Urban Pioneers and would eventually train as an actor at the William Esper Studio, following a permanent move to New York.
Since 1992, Rockwell has been an active member of LAByrinth Theater Company in New York City. His Off-Broadway credits include Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love (1991), Goose-pimples for The New Group (1997-98), and the titular role in The Last Days of Judas Iscariot at The Public Theater (2005). He has also appeared a number of times at the prestigious Williamstown Theatre Festival: in Lanford Wilson’s The Hot l Baltimore (2000), The Dumb Waiter & The Zoo Story (2001), as Stanley Kowalski in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire (2011), and as Eddie in Sam Shepard’s A Fool for Love (2014).
Rockwell made his Broadway debut opposite Christopher Walken in Martin McDonagh’s A Behanding in Spokane, which played the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre from February through June 2010. He would also reprise his WTF role as Eddie in Manhattan Theatre Club’s presentation of A Fool for Love at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre from September through December 2015. Rockwell has also participated in the popular 24 Hour Plays events in 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2009.
Rockwell’s film career began to gather momentum in the mid-1990s following critically acclaimed performances in Box of Moonlight (1996) and Lawn Dogs (1997). He went on to enjoy a remarkable year in 1999 with lauded appearances in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Green Mile, and Galaxy Quest. He would then become a regular in Hollywood with notable roles in Charlie’s Angels (2000), Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), Matchstick Men (2003), The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005), Frost/Nixon (2008), Moon (2009), Marvel’s Iron Man 2 (2010), Conviction (2010), Seven Psychopaths (2012), The Way, Way Back (2013), and Mr. Right (2015), among many others.
In 2018, Rockwell won both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance as troubled police officer Jason Dixon in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. In 2019, his portrayal of George W. Bush in Vice also earned him Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. Since then, he has also appeared in the 2019 films Jojo Rabbit and Richard Jewell.
On television, Rockwell portrayed iconic Broadway director/choreographer Bob Fosse in FX’s hit 2019 series Fosse/Verdon, earning his first Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series alongside another Golden Globe nomination. Other notable television credits include NBC’s Prince Street (1997-2000) and Netflix’s adult animated sitcom F is for Family (since 2015).
Rockwell returned to Broadway in 2022 to star opposite Laurence Fishburne and Darren Criss in a revival of David Mamet’s American Buffalo, earning a Tony nomination for his performance.
