Peace Camp: A Vigil tickets

The Armory’s Anita K. Hersh Artistic Director Deborah Warner has demonstrated a passion for and fascination with the power of “found” spaces. She has conceived and directed site-specific staged works that have transformed unexpected locations into places of enlightenment, including the Drama Desk Award-winning The Waste Land, in which audiences witnessed a T.S. Eliot poem performed by Fiona Shaw lit by a single light bulb on a desolate empty stage, and The Angel Project, a solitary, physical journey across multiple, mostly uninhabited locations across the city. Warner brings her artistic ingenuity to the Armory for the North American premiere of a newly conceived version of her coastal installation Peace Camp, commissioned for the 2012 London Cultural Olympiad. Relocating the project indoors, visitors are invited to make a pilgrimage through an encampment of glowing tents wandering freely without a fixed path, amid an all-encompassing soundscape of love poetry embedded in a tapestry of words, signals, and natural sounds by award winning-composer and sound designer Mel Mercier. These inspiring poems, rhymes, ballads, and laments serve as maps of human experience and passionate identity, weaving together threads of love in all their hues. The culminating experience is a quiet, contemplative artwork that celebrates peace, love, language, and landscape in our troubled times.
