It’s 1960s Kansas, and Janice’s parents are fighting for the integration of public swimming pools — a fierce civil rights struggle that overshadows her childhood and drives a wedge between Janice and her family. It’s also thirty years later, when Janice is asked to speak at a ceremony honoring her father, forced to reckon with the scars of a past she has tried to forget. A piercing, theatrically vivid story about the personal toll of fighting for justice, and the ultimate challenge of forgiveness.

Draining the pool. Memory play of parents who fought for Black civil rights, explaining 'draining the pool': rather than integrating, many towns drained and closed public pools, which creates collective loss for all, including the White majority. Maybe not your thing: anti-Black racism, US history, difficulty on kids of activists. Diversity: yes! All Black cis cast and characters and playwright. Cis straight Black female protagonist. 1.75 hours; no intermission
Emotional. Relavent. impactful
Memory play. Story of black struggles in America 1970s through 1990s as refracted through the story of a black family trying to integrate an all white swimming pool in Kansas. Excellent acting. However, felt a little too much like a history lesson and did not crystallize the black power vs integration debate well enough.
