About Degenerates
Get Degenerates tickets on New York Theater Guide to experience one of the most audacious new plays running this fall. Degenerates plays at Playwrights Horizons for a limited run but has already been extended due to popular demand. Concerning the online incel ("involuntary celibate") community, Degenerates off Broadway is a piercing look at one of the darkest corners of the web where today's men seek to be undesrtood.
Degenerates in New York City is written by Else Went and directed by Emma Rosa Went, the married writer-director pair who previously staged Initiative, the off-Broadway hit at the Public that won a Drama Desk Award. Now, the two reunite for this startling look at toxic masculinity, loneliness, and internet culture in our contemporary age. Audiences can expect a thrilling look at the push and pull between erotics and isolation in this new work.
Degenerates follows Miller, who leads a community of incels online while preaching about how hard men have it today, rendering them undesirable and unseen. But when he falls for one of his community members, questions of gender, desire, and identity crack open.
“Degenerates is a play that’s screaming to be heard,” said Playwrights Horizons Artistic Director Adam Greenfield in a statement. “Leaping into the darkness of male anxiety, it locates — through the inherently communal act of live theater — a glimmer of light and life.”
While the play navigates complex characters with morally reprehensible actions, “I hope that I never find myself having written an argument," playwright Elsa Went said in a statement. "I'm so much more interested in people and their contradictions and desires driving humor and erotics.”
The cast for this new play features Juan Arturo, Olivia Rose Barresi, Zachary W. Desmond, Tyler Nowell Felix, and Christopher Dylan White. Don't miss out on this hot new play — tickets to Degenerates are now on sale.

“Intense, empathetic dive into loneliness and connection”
A Raw Look at Modern Loneliness
This provocative play plunges audiences into the unsettling world of incel culture, emerging as something far more nuanced and surprisingly moving than expected. Audiences consistently praised the exc...
What It Feels Like
- Intensely provocative
- Unexpectedly tender
- Darkly funny
You’ll Love This If…
- You appreciate bold explorations of contemporary masculinity and isolation
- You enjoy character-driven drama with standout performances
- You want theater that challenges you while finding unexpected humanity
Incels struggle with belonging, community, loneliness, and attraction
The chemistry between the two lead actors is phenomenal, and the performances are easily the strongest aspects of the production. While the writing has plenty of humor, the play runs a little longer than it needs to. At times, the play becomes overly preachy on a range of topics, yet its main theme of loneliness never quite resonates and the ending feels somewhat unsatisfying and concocted. I love the concept for this show, but overall the execution didn’t do it for me.
Emotionally complex in ways I don't often see in mainstream theatre. Does not shy away from the ugly sides of the characters and doesn't stoop to cartoonish mockery. Really really intense, in a good way
