'What Became of Us' sets Off-Broadway cast, including Tony Shalhoub
The world-premiere, Off-Broadway debut play by Shayan Lotfi begins performances with Atlantic Theater Company in May under the direction of Jennifer Chang.
Atlantic Theater Company has set the complete cast for its production of What Became of Us, a new play by Shayan Lotfi. Performances run at Atlantic Stage 2 from May 17 to June 29, with opening night on June 4.
Two different casts will appear in What Became of Us. Rosalind Chao (3 Body Problem) and Tony Award winner BD Wong (M. Butterfly) will appear in the roles of Q and Z, respectively, from May 17 to June 15.
Emmy Award winner Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Saddam, House of Sand and Fog) and Emmy and Tony winner Tony Shalhoub (Monk, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will play Q and Z from June 10-29.
Both casts will perform the show back-to-back at the four performances from June 11-13.
"My intention for this piece has always been that the roles would alternate between separate pairings of actors from different diasporic backgrounds," Lofti said in a statement. "I am thrilled that Atlantic has supported this by bringing together this remarkable cast."
Written by Lofti and directed by Jennifer Chang, What Became of Us follows two siblings — "one born here" and "one born there" — trying to maintain their connections to both countries and cultures, and to each other.
The world-premiere play marks Lofti's Off-Broadway debut.
