'The Book of Mormon' becomes Broadway’s 12th-longest-running show
The hilariously irreverent, nine-time Tony Award-winning musical comedy at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre will celebrate 13 years on Broadway on March 24, 2024.
On December 28, 2023, The Book of Mormon played its 4,643rd performance on Broadway, surpassing Jersey Boys to become the 12th-longest-running show in Broadway history. The cast of The Book of Mormon celebrated this milestone by paying homage to Jersey Boys with a mash-up performance of "Walk Like A Man" and "Man Up" during their celebration.
The Book of Mormon holds the record as the longest-running show in the 98-year history of the Eugene O’Neill Theatre. The show follows two bright-eyed Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda to spread the word of God, as they quickly learn that the locals are not as excited about religion as they are.
Since its debut on March 24, 2011, The Book of Mormon has seen significant success, breaking the O’Neill Theatre house record over 50 times. Its accolades include nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album. Additionally, the production received five Drama Desk Awards, including Best Musical, the NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, the Drama League Award for Best Musical, and four Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Best Musical.
The creative team behind The Book of Mormon consists of South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, as well as Frozen and Avenue Q composer Robert Lopez, who all collaborated on the show’s book, music, and lyrics. The choreography is by Casey Nicholaw, who co-directs alongside Parker.
