'New York, New York' sets Broadway closing date
The John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Lin-Manuel Miranda musical was nominated for nine Tony Awards in 2023 and has played at the St. James Theatre since March.
Start spreading the news, it's leaving today. The Broadway musical New York, New York will close on July 30. At the time of closing, the show will have played 143 performances at the St. James Theatre.
New York, New York is loosely based on the 1977 Martin Scorsese film of the same name. Set in a booming post-WWII Manhattan, the show follows the troubled romance between jazz musician Jimmy and singer Francine, along with multiple other artists' journeys to find love and success in the city.
The cast at the time of closing includes Colton Ryan as Jimmy Doyle, Anna Uzele as Francine Evans, Clyde Alves as Tommy Caggiano, John Clay III as Jesse Webb, Janet Dacal as Sofia Diaz, Ben Davis as Gordon Kendrick, Oliver Prose as Alex Mann, Angel Sigala as Mateo Diaz, and Emily Skinner as Madame Veltri.
The show features a book by David Thompson and Sharon Washington and songs by John Kander and Fred Ebb, who wrote songs for the original film. These include hits like the title track and "And the World Goes 'Round" alongside cut songs from the duo's other shows and new tunes by Kander and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
New York, New York was nominated for nine 2023 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and won for its set design by Beowulf Boritt.
