NaTasha Yvette Williams joins Broadway cast of 'Tina: The Tina Turner Musical'
She will take over the role of Zelma from original cast member Dawnn Lewis.
She's shaking a tail feather at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre! NaTasha Yvette Williams will join the cast of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical on Broadway on February 4. She will take over the role of Zelma from original cast member Dawnn Lewis, who plays her final performance on January 30.
Williams was last seen on Broadway as Brianna in Douglas Lyons's play Chicken & Biscuits this past fall. Her other past Broadway roles include many musical roles, including Matron "Mama" Morton in Chicago, Becky in Waitress, Aretha and Joplinaire in A Night With Janis Joplin, Mariah in The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, and Sofia in The Color Purple.
Tina follows the life of Tina Turner from her church-singing upbringing in Nutbush, Tennessee to her international stardom as the Queen of Rock and Roll. Along the way, she meets Ike Turner and becomes his wife and stage partner, but eventually leaves him and reinvents herself as a solo icon. The musical had its world premiere in London's West End before opening on Broadway in 2019. The New York production earned 12 Tony nominations, including Best Musical, and won one for original lead actress Adrienne Warren.
The current Tina: The Tina Turner Musical cast is led by Nkeki Obi-Melekwe as Tina (also played by Kayla Davion at some performances), with Nick Rashad Burroughs as Ike, Tony Award nominee Myra Lucretia Taylor as Gran Georgeanna, and Jessica Rush as Rhonda.
