‘Into the Woods,’ starring Sara Bareilles, extends Broadway run
The show was originally set to close August 21.
UPDATE: Bareilles and the entire current cast of Into the Woods will perform through September 4. Casting for the remainder of the extension has yet to be announced.
We're getting a few more moments in the woods! The star-studded Broadway revival of Into the Woods will extend its run. Originally set to play for only eight weeks, through August 21, the musical will now remain at the St. James Theatre through October 16.
Into the Woods mashes up stories and characters from multiple Brothers Grimm fairytales into one adventure. The central characters are the Baker (Brian d'Arcy James) and the Baker's Wife (Grammy Award winner Sara Bareilles), who cannot have a child because a Witch (Tony Award winner Patina Miller) cursed them.
The Witch sends them on a quest into the woods to reverse the curse, and along the way, they meet characters like Cinderella (Phillipa Soo) and Little Red Ridinghood (Julia Lester), who have wishes and journeys of their own.
This production of Into the Woods is based on a two-week Off-Broadway revival at New York City Center, which sold out and received rave reviews. Multiple cast members from that production — including Bareilles, Lester, and Tony winner Gavin Creel as Cinderella's Prince — are reprising their roles on Broadway. Into the Woods casting for performances from August 22 is to be confirmed.
The five-star New York Theatre Guide review of the Broadway production calls Into the Woods "bewitchingly beautiful and impeccably performed" and "Broadway's giant summer blockbuster."
Lear deBessonet directs the production of James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim's musical. This is the third Broadway revival since Into the Woods's premiere in 1987, when it won three Tony Awards including Best Book and Best Score.
