The Heights are coming to Midtown! New York City Center will present Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes's musical In the Heights as its annual gala presentation this fall, running from October 28 to November 8 only.
In the Heights celebrates the community of Upper Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood (where Miranda grew up), following the relationships, ambitions, and struggles of various residents over the course of three hot summer days. Using hip-hop, Latin rhythms, and traditional Broadway sounds, it tells a multigenerational story centered around bodega owner Usnavi, who navigates the meaning of home alongside his neighbors in their rapidly changing neighborhood.
The show first debuted on Broadway in 2008, running for three years and winning four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It received a 2021 film adaptation directed by Jon M. Chu.
This Off-Broadway In the Heights revival is a concert staging, meaning it will have minimal sets in favor of putting the orchestra front and center, and actors may perform with scripts in hand.
David Mendizábal (Mexodus) directs. Additional cast and creative team members have yet to be announced.
"I'm so happy that New York City Center gets to bring In The Heights back for New Yorkers, since it's a show that is very much about and for New Yorkers,” said Jenny Gersten, NYCC's vice president and artistic director of musical theatre. “The musical captures the rhythms, resilience, and richness of the communities that define this city, and David is the perfect artist to bring this beloved show back to life.”
In addition to its fall gala presentation, New York City Center presents three other concert productions of rarely revived musicals each year as part of its Encores! series. The 2027 Encores! productions following In the Heights (which is not part of Encores!) have yet to be announced.
