UPDATE: Good Night, and Good Luck on Broadway, starring George Clooney, will play at the Winter Garden Theatre beginning on March 12, 2025, ahead of an April 3 opening.
Extra, extra! George Clooney will make his Broadway debut in the new play Good Night, and Good Luck in spring 2025. A theatre and exact dates for the production have yet to be announced.
“I am honored, after all these years, to be coming back to the stage and especially, to Broadway, the art form and the venue that every actor aspires to,” Clooney said in a statement.
The actor is one of Hollywood's best-known leading men, who came to prominence on the drama ER and has since earned two Oscars and four Golden Globe Awards for his work as an actor and director of dozens of films. His most famous films include From Dusk till Dawn, Batman & Robin, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and the Ocean's series.
In 2005, Clooney directed the movie Good Night, and Good Luck, the inspiration for the Broadway play. The plot follows the conflict between journalist Edward R. Murrow and senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s, mainly over the senator's anti-Communism and corruption.
Clooney also co-wrote the screenplay with Grant Heslov and starred as Murrow's co-producer Fred W. Friendly. On Broadway, he will star as Murrow; he also co-wrote the play's script with Heslov. Tony Award winner David Cromer (The Band's Visit) directs.
“Edward R. Murrow operated from a kind of moral clarity that feels vanishingly rare in today’s media landscape," Cromer said in a statement. "There was an immediacy in those early live television broadcasts that today can only be effectively captured on stage, in front of a live audience.”
