Andrew Scott to star in ‘Vanya’ off Broadway this spring

The Emmy-nominated Fleabag and All of Us Strangers star is the sole actor in this adaptation of Chekhov’s classic, reprising his performance from London in 2023.

He’s going from Father to Uncle! Olivier Award winner, Emmy Award nominee, and Golden Globe nominee Andrew Scott will star in Vanya off Broadway this spring, running for eight weeks only starting March 11. Opening night is March 18 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.

Scott is best known for his roles as the Hot Priest on the TV show Fleabag (Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series), Moriarty on the TV show Sherlock (BAFTA Television Award for Best Supporting Actor), and Adam in the movie All of Us Strangers (Golden Globe nomination). He also earned an Emmy nomination for leading an episode of the Netflix show Black Mirror.

He first led Vanya, playwright Simon Stephens’s one-man adaptation of the classic Anton Chekhov play Uncle Vanya, in London’s West End in fall 2023, earning a 2024 Olivier nomination. Scott will reprise his performance off Broadway, playing all eight characters. The show marks his first return to the New York stage since 2006's The Vertical Hour on Broadway.

In a five-star review of Vanya on London Theatre, one critic said of Scott’s performance, “You won’t find a more remarkable actor doing a more remarkable piece of theatre anywhere in the West End.”

Sam Yates returns to direct the production. Vanya also features set design by Rosanna Vize, lighting design by James Farncombe, sound design by Dan Balfour, video design by Jack Phelan, movement direction by Michela Meazza, music by Kelly Moran, and costume design by Natalie Pryce.

Uncle Vanya, originally written in 1897, follows family members whose quiet lives on their countryside farm turn upside down with the arrival of additional relatives. As long-held secrets, tensions, and desires bubble up, everyone must reckon with the unhappiness in their lives.

A separate revival of Uncle Vanya starring Steve Carell appeared on Broadway earlier this year. That production, with a full cast of performers, was directed by Lila Neugebauer and featured a new translation by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize nominee Heidi Schreck.
