‘The Lost Boys’ Tony winners on their back-to-back honors

After their award-winning collaboration on Maybe Happy Ending in 2025, Dane Laffrey and Michael Arden, along with Jen Schriever, triumphed with this year's larger-than-life vampire musical.

Double vision never felt so rewarding.

Design team members of The Lost Boys found themselves winners at the Tony Awards on Sunday night — just like they did last year for their contributions to a different show.

Best Scenic Design of a Musical was a lock for Dane Laffrey, for his multilevel-level set in the show, based on the 1987 vampire movie of the same name, that took home four total awards on June 7.

“I want to take a moment to share this Tony with the people who brought this design to life,” said Laffrey, “the people who make it move, the instance, brilliant people who figured out how to build a three-story building inside another building that had recently been lifted above Times Square,” referencing the recently renovated Palace Theatre.

At a press conference following his win, Laffrey shared that one of the thrills of working on the show was creating a world of expansive illusion “where actually, there's not as much there as we think there is. It seems so tall, so deep. We really were able to find something that just looks wild in a live theatre eight times a week.”

Last year, Laffrey won for his scenic design of Maybe Happy Ending, on which he worked with Lost Boys director and co-lighting designer Michael Arden. He and Jen Schriever won Best Lighting Design of a Musical for The Lost Boys, marking Arden's first Tony for lighting design after winning for his direction of Maybe Happy Ending last year.

The Lost Boys is a show about wanting to belong,” Arden said on Sunday in his acceptance speech. “This room of people, this community, has allowed me to belong somewhere for the last 20 years.” We can't wait to see what other awards the next 20 years bring for him and his collaborators.
