About I Became We

Get I Became We tickets on New York Theatre Guide to see this thrilling and unique new work: a monologue in the form of a 16-person choir. Playwright Mona Pirnot is known for audacious and confessional pieces, as with I Love You So Much I Could Die and I'm Assuming You Know David Greenspan, and now I Became We off Broadway showcases a new chapter in her life, this one about the existential questions inside one 30-something woman's head.

I Became We plays for a limited time at the Atlantic Theater downtown. Pirnot returns to this venue where she had her last hit, I'm Assuming You Know David Greenspan, which was about a young artist determining whether or now she should stay in the theatre. That work followed another vulnerable one, I Love You So Much I Could Die at New York Theatre Workshop, which traced Pirnot's grief and was performed with her back to the audience.

Pirnot is a singular writer, and this new play pairs her with another daring artist on the rise: Relentless Award-winning composer Jack D. Coen. Coen crafts choral music for the piece, lending it an epic and timeless quality while being grounded by Pirnot's plainspoken script. In the play, Pirnot poses a 30-something female artist who is curious about her next chapter. It offers a candid, funny, and moving account of what it means to ask life's biggest questions.

Sometimes, those big questions don't have easy answers. As such, it feels appropriate that a chorus inside the subject's head are asking them as one, posing distinct and complex points of view. Pirnot, an Obie Award winner, is joined by another: Sarah Benson (Fairview), an Atlantic alum who directs this new play.

Uplifting joyful evening of music and storytelling

A long-form essay that could be found in a magazine but instead sung aloud by a 16-person choir. A very touching story about a woman in her thirties and her decision about what to do next with her life.
