Get You Got Older tickets when they go on sale on New York Theatre Guide to see Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development, Search Party) star in the first major revival of this five-star, "extraordinary" (Time Out New York) play. Playwright Clare Barron (a Pultizer Prize finalist for Dance Nation) and director Anne Kauffman (a Tony Award nominee for Mary Jane) reunite for this fresh staging for You Got Older in New York, running for a limited time only this February and March at downtown's Cherry Lane Theatre.
In You Got Older off Broadway, Mae (Shawkat) has returned to her small hometown in Washington to take care of her ailing father. After a breakup and a job loss — the price for dating your boss — Mae is unmoored and searching and soon connects with a mysterious stranger who offers the intimacy she's been craving. A darkly comic play about family, illness, and cowboys, You Got Older explores how to remain upright when everything you know comes crashing down around you.
You Got Older premiered in 2014 at HERE Arts Center, presented by Page 73, and was immediately met with rave reviews. "This terrific new play offers a hilarious and painfully affecting blend of oddball dialogue, beautifully observed family dynamics, and a preoccupation with the weird ways of the body," The New Yorker wrote. Additionally, Time Out New York said the play "moved me as few new plays have."
"The chance to revisit this play with Anne Kauffman is a dream come true,” said playwright Clare Barron. “We both got older. Who knows if we're wiser! But it's a beautiful experience to see the play through a new lens with a new venture on a precious, old stage. Life and intimacy continue to confound.”

i am so glad I got to see this. the performances were so candid and the subject was so moving. left the theater sobbing.
Score 93 It’s very rare that I score a play above a 90. This was exceptional! I typically love shows with very flawed characters. This is the only show I can remember where none of the characters are flawed. And at the same time none of the characters are over the top good either. They’re just normal every day people that you can relate to and know someone just like them in your life. I cannot get over how much I enjoyed everything about this production! Some of the ensemble were only in the play for a scene or two but they were all needed and they were all perfection. I typically don’t like plays about cancer because we have seen the subject done so many times but that just shows how incredible this was in every way. It also had a perfect ending which is really hard to do in theater
A moving show with lots of opportunity to cry as well. Baron is a talented writer, at times a bit too gross to my taste (extensive talk on body odor, fluids, rash etc) I get that it's part of the "vibe", she's trying to say something intimate with it, just a bit much for me. Actors did a great job, and so did the director. There were moments where it felt like the "ping-pong" is too anticipated, like the actors are just waiting to say their line, instead of listening; and the argument & yelling between father and daughter felt forced. Overall 8/10 recommend, glad I saw it.
