In Giant in New York, Lithgow plays Dahl at a pivotal moment in the famed artist's career. A true scandal — revolving around antisemitic outbursts in the press — shakes his legacy after the review of one of his books' illustrations. It was a powerfully impactful show on a serious topic that was delicately handled. I was not prepared to be so floored by the plot and the way it was presented.
I love Mr. Lithgow, but I personally feel that he accepted this role in exchange for trying to give his son a leg up in the theater world. The story is weak and foolish. It was an attempt for one religion to spank the audience into accepting that they are wrong to question them and instead it attempted to educate the masses into accepting that this specific religion is never to be questioned. Absolutely ridiculous. Also there were lines delivered by the actors to rile up the audience members who subscribe to this religion because they are under immense scrutiny specifically right now. I am a member of this faith and there was so much more that this play could and should have done. What no human should ever do is tell another just to accept and not question them or their lives and careers can and will be destroyed by this faith. It was appalling. The audience was so incredibly rude to the actors and ushers who seemed powerless to control them. They were eating….as in some lady pulled out a whole meal in front of me and was eating it. They weed loudly talking and I’m not joking……..there a a symphony of audible burping and farting the entire time. It was like being in a zoo. Mi believe that people who belong to my faith bought out a lot of tickets and handed them out to their parishioners specifically to drive focus and attention to this watered down bull and what they did was drive ticket prices through the roof. I will always love Mr. Lithgow but seeing him in this made me lose some respect for him. I’m in shock that he won a Tony for this. It should never have been nominated to begin with.
Gripping story with relevant themes such as the social problem of anti-Semitism . Phenomenal acting.
