See a one-of-a-kind show about a one-of-a-kind talent: Alexander McQueen. House of McQueen plays as the debut production at The Mansion, a new Off-Broadway venue located in Hudson Yards. London stage star Liam Tamne and Tony Award nominee Emily Skinner lead this sumptuous new production that is full of fierce costumes and fiercer personalities.
Experience House of McQueen off Broadway and get a behind-the-scenes look at the British designer's storied career and life. Written by Darrah Cloud and directed by Sam Helfrich, House of McQueen follows McQueen's ascent to be a top couturier, redefining how we see, wear, and analyze fashion.
“All I wanna do is live my life on a runway," McQueen says in this spellbinding play. And he sure did. Told as a memory play, the new work zeroes in on McQueen's insatiable hunger to rise to the top while also battling his own fragilities and inner demons. From East London’s council flats to Paris catwalks, House of McQueen shows how a catwalk is a battleground, and one that McQueen intended to win.
A kaleidoscopic account of one legend's life, the play blends fashion shows, family wars, and public spectacle into one over-the-top fever dream. Lee’s intense bond with his mother, sister, and muse Isabella Blow grounds the story in love, loss, and creative obsession.
The play also comes from a deeply personal place: it is produced by McQueen's nephew, Gary McQueen, who aims to use the play to expose the designer's legacy as an icon and humanness as a striving artist. "There was a lot more that he could have achieved. He didn’t because of the limitations of the time," he told WWD.
