See this riveting new play and Nazareth Hassan's latest after The New York Times Critic's Pick Bowl EP. Examining, with plenty of dark comedy and timely awareness, a community on the brink of despotism, Practice plays at Playwrights Horizon's Judy O. Rubin Theater on 42nd Street this fall for a limited run only.
Don't miss Practice off Broadway, and dive into the tantalizing world of Asa Leon: the avant-garde auteur of the moment. For their next highly-anticipated performance piece, Asa assembles a company of actors to live together in an old Brooklyn church and make a play about themselves. What could go wrong?
Hassan’s painfully hyperreal and dark, cringe, and timely comedy charts the gradual seduction of power, and what we each sacrifice to belong to a group. The sprawling ensemble cast includes many New York theatre staples, featuring Opa Adeyemo, Karina Curet, Amandla Jahava, Mark Junek, Hayward Leach, Maya Margarita, Ronald Peet, Susannah Perkins, Omar Shafiuzzaman, and Alex Wyse.
In a propulsive breakout year for Hassan, Practice follows the acclaimed Bowl EP at Vineyard Theatre (written and directed by Hassan), praised in a New York Times Critic’s Pick review for “pulsing with concentrated immediacy” and deemed by New York Magazine “compelling, and at times, unbearably poignant.” Director Keenan Tyler Oliphant has been celebrated for his “rich staging” (The New York Times, in a Critic’s Pick Review) of Heather Christian’s Terce: a Practical Breviary.
"Practice follows an ensemble of independent, intelligent, critically aware thinkers who slowly give themselves over to the control of a charismatic leader: a story that strikes me as painfully germane to the culture today," Playwrights Artistic Director Adam Greenfield said in a statement.
