About My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?)

Award-winning British actor Rob Madge brings their joyful solo show to New York after two hit runs in London's West End. My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?) celebrates the power of familial acceptance, self-discovery, and the childhood desire to put on theatre at home. Get My Son’s a Queer tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

Madge wrote and performs My Son’s a Queer off Broadway, which is inspired by their own childhood. In fact, Madge doesn't just tell old stories — like the time they tried to stage a full-fledged Disney parade in the living room — but shows them through old home videos on VHS. With humor, heart, and lots of fabulous costumes, Madge shares how their family's support of their interests in Disney and theatre later led them to accept Madge's non-binary, queer identity, making Madge's self-discovery journey a magical one.

Appropriately, My Son’s a Queer doesn't fit into neat categories of play or musical. It's a multimedia production that, in addition to the home videos and Madge's storytelling, includes some songs as well. Those are by Pippa Cleary, known for writing The Great British Bake-Off musical.

Madge is known for their onstage career in the U.K., having performed in Mary Poppins, Macbeth, and Oliver! in London's West End, along with the 25th anniversary international tour and concert of Les Misérables. They premiered My Son’s a Queer at London's Turbine Theatre in 2021, followed by runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in the West End in 2022. A 2023 encore West End run followed, all leading up to the show's nomination for an Olivier Award for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play. The show also won the 2022 WhatsOnStage Award for Best Off-West End Production.
