JOY: A New True Musical tickets

See the uplifting true story of Joy Mangano come to life on stage. Tony Award nominee Betsy Wolfe (& Juliet, Falsettos, Waitress) stars as the title character in Joy: A New True Musical, starting performances at the Laura Pels Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre this summer.

Joy traces the life of a singular sensation: Joy Mangano, inventor of the self-wringing Miracle Mop. But before she made it big, Joy had it hard: a single mother battling financial struggles, her story of resilience is one that redefined the American dream. A celebration of the hardworking women who are too often an invisible part of the American economy, Joy shines a light on one mother’s industrial spirit, maternal love, and ability to clean up just about any mess that comes her way.

Even if audiences aren’t familiar with the magical mop Mangano invented, they likely know of Jennifer Lawrence, the Academy Award nominee who starred in Joy, a film about Mangano’s life. Now, that story is seen singing on stage with Wolfe and her dazzling voice carrying the show.

Jill Abramovitz co-stars as Joy’s mother, Toots, with Honor Blue Savage appearing as her daughter, Christie. Tony Award winner Ken Davenport, who produced the hit revival of Once on This Island, writes the book for this new musical and AnnMarie Milazzo writes the score. As co-orchestrator of Once on This Island, Milazzo was nominated for a Tony, Grammy, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Award. Plus, she is the Grammy-nominated female vocalist for East Village Opera Company. Lorin Latarro, choreographer of shows including Once Upon a Mattress and Into the Woods, directs.
