About Spring Awakening

Get Spring Awakening tickets when they go on sale on New York Theatre Guide to see this Tony Award winner for Best Musical return to New York City. Frank Wedekind’s once-banned 1891 play became a musical sensation thanks to Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s seminal score, which features hit songs like "The Song of Purple Summer," "Mama Who Bore Me," "Those You've Known," "My Junk," and "The Bitch of Living." Now, Tony Award winner Danya Taymor (The Outsiders, Heroes of the Fourth Turning) directs this highly anticipated revival.

In Spring Awakening the musical, teenagers Melchior, Wendla, Moritz, and their friends are entering puberty with no guidance from their parents or adults in their lives. As they search for answers and understanding, they form beautiful connections that also become tragic. Unequipped to handle the rapid changes in their lives, the teenagers sing about their angsts in a gorgeous, Tony-winning contemporary rock score. The cast album went on to win a Grammy Award.

The show debuted on Broadway in 2006, winning multiple Tony Awards and making stars of its leads Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, and John Gallagher Jr., and the musical was later revived in 2015 with Deaf West Theatre. Performed twice on Broadway (plus on the West End where it won the Olivier for Best New Musical), this is audiences chance to see a new, intimate production: Spring Awakening off Broadway comes to Studio Seaview, a home for daring, artist-driven works in a special venue right in Midtown.

Fierce, honest, compassionate, and unflinching, this new production will explore the experience of teenagers caught between desire, repression, fear, and discovery — then and now. The musical will be choreographed by Celia Rowlson-Hall (Aftersun, Girls) – in her theatrical debut - with music supervision by Or Matias. Tickets to Spring Awakening in New York will be available here soon.
