About Kyoto

See this four-star (London Theatre, The Guardian) play about Big Oil, and big drama. As climate change activism is on the rise, nations look to see how to address the issue as one thorny lawyer tries to maintain Big Oil's power. Kyoto plays for a limited run only this fall at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center Theater.

This startling and darkly comic new play is by Good Chance Theatre Artistic Directors and playwrights Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson (the acclaimed creators of The Jungle). Tony Award winner Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin, who together directed Stranger Things: The First Shadow, reunite for this project.

An Olivier Award nominee for Best New Play, Kyoto off Broadway comes to New York City after its acclaimed West End bow. Starring Tony nominee Stephen Kunken (Enron, Billions) as the American lawyer and oil industry lobbyist Donald Perlman, Kyoto follows the first international treaty to address climate change, highlighting the moment nations came together to to set aside their differences for the sake of the earth. But how successful were they?

"This dramatisation of the vital 1997 climate conference is urgent, emotional theatre," London Theatre wrote. "For a show that barely leaves the boardroom, it’s impressively dynamic. As compromises are made, and the room edges closer to reaching decisions, it’s also emotional – even though we know, 30 years on, how much still needs to change."

Delegates argue about commas, word choice, and implications, revealing the surreal and hysterical in minute decisions that impact how we rely on oil. "Kyoto could have a sequel, which I would happily see," The Guardian says. But this play about the diplomatic consequences of commas deserves a string of exclamation marks."
