Classic Stage Company sets 2025-26 Off-Broadway season
The theatre institution will present three shows, including a rarely revived musical, a world-premiere play, and the unfinished final work of a classic writer.
Classic Stage Company has announced its 2025-26 Off-Broadway season, which will feature one musical revival, a world-premiere play, and the New York premiere of a work by a celebrated playwright.
From October to December, the season begins with the musical The Baker’s Wife, featuring a book by Joseph Stein and music and lyrics by Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz. Gordon Greenberg directs the stage adaptation of the 1938 French film about love, payback, and bread in a small French village.
Next, from February to March 2026, is the world premiere of Marcel on the Train, co-written by Tony Award-nominated actor Ethan Slater (Spongebob SquarePants, Wicked movie) and Marshall Pailet. Pailet also directs, and Slater stars as Marcel Marceau, a world-famous mime who also joined the French resistance and smuggled Jewish children to safety in World War II. Performances begin in February.
The final show in the season, running from May to June of 2026, is the New York premiere of The Emporium, Thornton Wilder’s final, unfinished play about an orphaned young man who escapes to the city. This version is adapted and completed by Kirk Lynn and directed by Rob Melrose.
Performance dates and complete casts and creative teams will be announced at a later date.
The season also includes the Rediscovery Readings, a series of one-night-only staged readings centering this year on mystery stories.
